Maximo Application Suite – Convert Oracle Database to DB2

End of Maximo 76 Support is not very far and it is high time when organizations should start planning for upgrade to Maximo Application Suite (MAS). Maximo Application Suites provides multiple options for customers to host their application -

  1. On Premise in the data center
  2. On cloud via Hyper scalers
  3. On SaaS services like IBM MAS SaaS

Typically, IBM Maximo 7.6 supports 3 databases – IBM DB2, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. Out of these DB, Oracle is very popular database specially being used in Large or Mid-Size Organizations.

In case of On Premise or On Hyper scaler option customers can keep the Oracle database outside of Red hat OpenShift Cluster (OCP) but if customers are going for SaaS services of IBM MAS, customer will have extra step to convert Oracle database to IBM DB2 before they can upgrade the Maximo 76 data to Maximo Application Suite.

Convert Oracle DB to IBM DB2-

To convert Oracle to DB2 there are multiple approaches which are possible –

  1. Use tools like IBM Data Movement Tool (IBM DMT).
  2. Use UNCLVT utilities provided by IBM.
  3. Use 3rd party tools.

Each of the approach has some limitations which needs to be understood. For example – IBM DMT tool or other 3rd Party tool can convert the database tables & its data but it can’t convert SQL Queries saved in Maximo database for example – Saved Queries, Relationship where clauses etc.

The UNCLVT tool provided from IBM was available with Maximo 7.1 and Maximo 7.5 but it has been discontinued from Maximo 7.6. Use of this tool is also not supported.

What all to convert & Test-

Looking at the options and challenges associated with each of this option, we will require to identify the applications where conversion of SQL clauses will be required followed by thorough testing of each application. Following diagram provides the details of such applications-
